Remember Bill Nye the science Guy? Well if not, he was the host of a cheesy, but really cool science show for children. I just read an interesting article he wrote in the Wall Street Journal. It’s about his energy efficient home and how he transferred it, so I figured I would forward some of the cool features to you all. So here goes a “green” house breakdown with Bill Nye:

“I have 18 solar panels, each about 3 feet by 4 feet.” He says this produces 8 kilowatt-hours of electricity each day in the winter and about 3 times that in the summer. This means that he can about power his house all night with the electricity he accrues during the day. “If nothing else, it’s just fun to get an “electrical service charge” of $16. “

He says his biggest, but more or less, most efficient investment was his windows which are double-pane, low-emissivity glass. Which is a fancy way of saying they don’t transfer temperatures quickly. Bill says they cost as much as a nice small car but at the same time he used his A/C less than five times last summer.

One of the smaller cheaper ways he makes his house more self-sustaining is by channeling his rain gutters into barrels and he collects the water to water his non-food plants. A very simple, yet effective way to conserve resources.

Along with his solar panels he has a solar water heater on his roof. This is a really ingenious addition! My brother-in-law uses this system of heating his water and he loves it…unless it’s overcast but of course there is a backup water heater.

I hope this helps start some ideas for your home to better conserve energy and water.

Ever hear of Charlie Huhn? How about Foghat? Well Charlie Huhn is Foghat’s front man, and apparently also a big fan of Lake Tahoe and Heavenly ski resort. Check out this awesome interview with the “slow rider” himself.

http://www.tahoedailytribune.com/article/20130124/NEWS/130129956/1068&ParentProfile=1056

Enjoy art? Well you only have one week left to go check out Andy Skaffs art exhibit! He calls it “New Colors” and he paints nature scenes with oil in the plain air tradition. Have a look at this article and go have a peek at the exhibit in Wolfdales in Tahoe city, you may just be inspired.

http://www.tahoeculture.com/art/north-shore-art-scene/andy-skaff-plein-air-painter/

One of our own, a Lake Tahoe girl, is going to the winter X-Games(basically the action sports equivalent to the Olympics) this weekend and plans to trump the competition with a trick involving a ridiculous amount of airtime, breaking Newton’s laws, and More twist than a centrifuge. Well that’s the best way I can explain it, I better just let Pat Graham do it in her article:

http://www.tahoedailytribune.com/article/20130123/ARCHIVES01/130129968/1057&parentprofile=1057

Sometimes I am in the mood for a quiet, peaceful, walk, and sometimes I’m in the mood for fun and games. Sometimes I’m in the mood to swim in the lake, or to build snowmen in the middle of nowhere. Sometimes I’m in the mood to sit and gaze at the water and mountains from the beaches of Lake Tahoe, while at other times I just want to sit in front of the fireplace in my cabin style home, with a fire roaring in the fireplace, while I sip on hot cocoa and watch the snow fall out the window.

But there’s one thing that I love to do, and am nearly always in the mood for: I love to drive! There is nothing more relaxing than a drive around beautiful Lake Tahoe, no matter what time of year it is!
I love to see the lake and mountains from different views, at different times of day, and to stop in the little shops and restaurants along the way….

Today, I will approach Lake Tahoe from U.S. Highway 50 East, on Spooner Summit. The question is whether to go to Highway 28, on the right, or to turn left and stay on Highway 50. When I travel around Lake Tahoe, I nearly always go to the right, and since I am a creature of habit, I guess I will go to the right. As much as I enjoy driving, it is difficult to keep my eyes on the road, and take in the sight of the lake at the same time. Lake Tahoe reminds me of the ocean with the waves and the shore; for as far as the eye can see there is water; the mountains in the west are only faintly visible. The water matches the sky, exactly, and today the sky and the water are deep blue. There are sailboats on the lake, and water skiers. Thank God for the rest stops along the side of the freeway, where I can pull over and take in the scene.

I drive past the infamous Sand Harbor and Crystal Bay, and look at the cabins on both sides of the highway. While I don’t stop at every town around the lake, Incline Village is a definite stopping place for me. I love to walk around and look in the little shops. Sometimes, I purchase souvenirs, but even if I don’t, I love window shopping in these stores. My favorite, though, is the year round Christmas Shop in Christmas Tree Village! I love Christmas, year round! So, I definitely stop at Christmas Tree Village, and spend a long time there! My next stop is King’s Beach. I’m usually ready for lunch by this time, so I find a sandwich shop, or burger stand, or something, and head to the beach.

I walk out on the dock, and sit down with my legs dangling over the edge. Lake Tahoe reminds me of an ocean, but the water itself sure doesn’t resemble the ocean. It is crystal clear! Beautiful! Reluctantly, I walk to the car and get in. Brockway, Tahoe Vista, Carnelian Bay….As I drive by I make sure my window is rolled down, so I can take in the pine scents. I look up at the cabins, and houses as I pass through, and sometimes pull over to the side and think, “Man! It would be sooooo nice to live up here!” There would be views of the mountains, and views of the lake.

There’d be all kinds of wildlife everywhere I looked, and even in my back yard! I could have a beautiful home, either large or small, up in higher elevations, away from the highway. I would be surrounded by trees, and in some places I would have a full view of the lake. In others, I would have a small glimpse, and still in others the lake would be completely hidden from view.

But I would still have the peace and quiet, and the wildlife to see. I could always walk down to the lake, or, if it’s far enough away, drive my car. I could also opt to live closer to the freeway. No matter which way I decide to go, I would be living in paradise.

My next stop is in Tahoe City. I get out for a little while, buy a soda and a snack, and stretch my legs. I cannot believe the beauty I am engulfed in. I keep driving, through Homewood, Tahoma, and Meeks Bay. I have been in the car for a long time at this point, so I get out again, and walk around. I get back into the car and drive to Emerald Bay. The definition of beauty. And wonder. I look in the various shops there,
but generally stand in awe at the beauty of God’s Creation. I think about someday getting married in this beautiful area; what a beautiful way to start a marriage!

The next stop is South Lake Tahoe, where there is yet another Christmas Shop, called, “South Lake Tahoe Holidays.” I go into that store and get lost. It’s time for dinner, too, so I find someplace to have dinner, and spend more time taking in the scenery, and breathing the fresh air, sadly thinking that my journey is about over. I get back in the car and pass through Round Hill and Zephyr Cove, then head back to Carson City.

What a day! I am tired by now, but it is a “good tired.” I feel totally relaxed, and relieved of stress. I have beautiful memories to last a lifetime. Or, at least until I get back in the car and take another trip around the lake. Maybe next time I will start in Incline Village, and go the other way around the lake….

After seemingly endless days of blue, sunny skies and seasonably warm
temperatures, snow lovers (like me), snowboarders, and skiers, can finally rejoice! At
last, winter has arrived in Lake Tahoe, and dumped sixteen inches of fresh powdery
snow. The snow is not only powder, making for beautiful skiing and snowboarding
conditions, it is wet, creating a solid base for more to come.

It’s the “more to come” phrase which really excites me! There’s nothing quite
like Lake Tahoe, with its serene beauty, year round. But when winter graces this area,
making our little world white, and adding a diamond sparkle, it is simply breathtaking!
Diamonds? Sure! Diamonds, and emeralds and rubies, and sapphire, and—well, snow
always has a majestic sparkle, which looks like real jewels are on the surface of it. But
at Lake Tahoe, it’s easy to imagine that the snow is reflecting the magnificent colors of
the area itself. The trees, the lake, and let’s not forget about Emerald Bay! What a clear
picture of Heaven on earth….

Peace and quiet….Lake Tahoe has a quiet, peaceful atmosphere year round, all by
itself. Add snow to it, and you can hear a pin drop! The jewels in the snow? Why, they
are even more prominent at night. The sky is dark, and the moon shines down on the
lake; the snow illumines the night even when the moon isn’t out, and the “jewels” seem
to sparkle more than ever. It is simply breath taking! But, the best thing about Lake
Tahoe is that although it is a quiet, peaceful getaway, and even better place to live, it is
both peaceful and fun!

Whether I am rushing down the slopes, or walking down the streets and taking in
the pine scent as I go in and out of the shops of our rustic villages, I am simply in awe. I
don’t even have to leave home to be in awe, either! If I sit in front of the fireplace with
a steaming cup of hot tea, gazing out the large window in my living room, and view the
sparkling tree tops surrounding the always angelic Lake Tahoe, I am simply overcome by
my surroundings. Oh, how blessed we are in the wintertime at Lake Tahoe!
